Seeding, Managing/Grooming the Product Backlog

Effectively managing (a.k.a. grooming/refining) Product Backlogs is critical to Lean development. Backlog Management is the on-going process by which the Product Owner (often in collaboration with a Business Analyst and/or Customer-Side Teams) adds, adjusts, prepares, and prioritizes Backlog items to make sure the technical team releases the most valuable product features to customers as soon as possible.

Typically, the Product Owner (or whoever manages the Backlog) is responsible for replenishing the Backlog with new Features, User Stories, etc. The Product Owner needs to right-size and refine Features, Epics, and User Stories to prioritize and estimate them properly so that the Lean/Agile team knows which feature(s) to develop in the next iteration.

Business Agility Depends on EFFECTIVE Backlog Management

What makes Lean and Agile development methods so successful is the speed of the customer feedback loop. No longer does a company have to wait years for feedback from their users and customers.

Each release takes anywhere from minutes (Continuous Delivery / Integration) to a few months (for other Lean and Agile methods). Either results in instant feedback from the user community.

However, taking advantage of this new-found knowledge depends entirely on the effectiveness of your Product Backlog Management.

Managing a Backlog is demanding since a Product Backlog is always in a state of flux adjusting to integrate new visions based upon product feedback.
